Democrats: What Should Be Happening

I hear it frequently.

But I sense it all the time.

Democrats are licking their lips in the hope that a lot of the pundits are correct: They will take back both houses of Congress in a few weeks.

Then they can launch myriad investigations.

Then they can impeach.

Then they can avenge.

As near as I can tell that is the situation.

And it is complete bullshit.

If they win back both houses of Congress, I assure you the people who voted for the Democrats care nothing about investigation and impeachment.

And, anyway, impeachment is futile because 67 votes are needed to convict.

So why tilt at that windmill when the voters don't give a shit about it and you can't make it accomplish anything?

Here are ten things, not THE TEN THINGS, just ten things that the voters care about.

  1. “Make childcare affordable so parents can work without going broke.”
  2. “Protect Social Security so every worker’s retirement is secure.”
  3. “Lower healthcare costs so getting sick doesn’t mean financial ruin.”
  4. “Raise wages that actually cover the real cost of living.”
  5. “Build housing people can afford in the communities where they live.”
  6. “Fix the broken elder‑care system so families aren’t crushed by it.”
  7. “Rebuild America’s infrastructure so daily life stops breaking down.”
  8. “Guarantee access to mental‑health care before crises happen.”
  9. “Make higher education and job training affordable again.”
  10. “Stop corporate price‑gouging so groceries and essentials don’t cost a paycheck.”
Those are pretty heavy.

If any of them got addressed the party that addressed them would get credit.

And if momentum from those TEN THINGS carried into 2028, and if that momentum elected a president who would make those THINGS the basis for his or her presidency, and his or her legislative agenda, we might have a new, and hard to unhorse, era of the people, and of democracy.

We might have a new new deal.

On the other hand, the party that impeached and investigated in lieu of those TEN THINGS would get voted out in the next cycle - if there were another cycle - and the merry go round would keep going round.

We have long been in an era of executive orders.

Those work.

But they only last until struck down by the supreme court or made null by an election.

And at best, they are only the narrow thoughts of the executive, not the product of the legislative system that has produced the strongest and most prosperous democracy in history.

Laws are what make America Great.

So, if the Democrats win both houses a better use of that temporary power would be to LEGISLATE rather than INVESTIGATE.

Democrats: If you win, use your fleeting time in office to pass laws in support of the TEN THINGS.

Or TEN NEW THINGS that you think are even more important to the people.

Absolutely, trump will veto each and every one of whatever law you pass.

That's the whole point to legislating in leu of investigating.

You support the TEN THINGS.

donnie's defenders, the ones who won't vote guilty, don't give a shit about the people.

So, they would never override a presidential veto.

In fact, armed with the filibuster, they would probably block every bill from final passage, so donnie would never get to veto anything.

And having multiple bills proposing things clearly advantageous to the people stymied in process is a strategic position a lot more powerful than presiding over a failed trial in the Senate.

It might even fuel a cleansing fire at the ballot box in 2028.

And a president-for-the-people might be elected.

And that might start a virtuous loop: The executive listens to the people and crafts policy that makes their lives better; the legislature crafts and writes bills in support of that policy; the executive signs those bills into law; society benefits; the people vote to continue having a government of, by and for the people, rather than a government of whim, tantrum, crony capitalism and corruption.

And that would be good.
