Google’s quantum program is a physics vanity project. If they come in first, great — they get a Nature cover. If they never deliver a usable machine, Alphabet still prints money from ads, cloud, Android, YouTube, and AI.
There is no existential pressure.
Microsoft
Microsoft’s bet is topological qubits, which is basically a moonshot inside a moonshot. If it works, they leapfrog everyone. If it doesn’t, Azure, Office, Windows, GitHub, and Copilot keep the company dominant.
Again: no existential pressure.
IBM
IBM is the only player whose quantum program is not optional.
Quantum is:
their identity
their future revenue engine
their differentiation
their only plausible path back to substrate dominance
the successor to S/360, AS/400, and zSeries as the “machine that defines the company”
If IBM does not deliver a usable quantum system, they become a consulting company with a legacy hardware division. If they do deliver, they become the civilization‑critical compute vendor again.
For IBM, quantum is not a research program. It is the company.
