During President Harry's (Truman) two administrations he fairly quickly got the reputation of not brooking idiots and having a fairly short fuse when dealing with factotums and morons.
There is the story about - he was confronted with some fairly serious post WWII economic problems - the time, after yet another in an apparently never-ending number of not very useful briefings from economists, he said to the Press, "these economists all say the same thing: on one hand this, on the other hand, that; I need to have a one-armed economist".
Some other time in his Presidency he got tagged with a saying, sometimes a chant (after all, lock her up is a chant) "Give 'em hell, Harry".
He was once asked about that.
What did he think of it?
What did it mean?
As best as I can re-create what he said, he said "well, I just tell the truth; they think that's hell".
Last night President Joe told the truth.
Boy, the republicans thought that that was hell.
